I have a thing for bio-chemistry, you could say. Eh, just what do I mean by that?
I'm quite convinced that all biological matter around us, including our own bodies, contain far more exceptional value than we give them credit for. Be it in terms of material properties or the processes they execute.
I'm so fascinated with this theme that I have a biotech intern working on understanding how much higher value we can derive from all sorts of plants & plant residues than what we are doing right now. FYI, in most cases, plant residues are used as fuel or for making fairly low-end products like paper, a pathetic underutilization of what they can be, in my opinion.
Now, let me - at last - tell you what I wanted to. I recently came across this unique company - Genomines. Based out of California, the startup is mining nickel through plants.
How does this work? They identify soils and lands and other mine tailings from where extracting nickel is not commercially viable. And then they grow biotech boosted plants that suck up the nickel from the ground...and finally recover the metal from the biomass using a variety of methods.
I tell you once more, those plants, they are worth a lot more than we think.
